How we measure it

  • Each train counts once per service day, with the last known delay of its journey. For lines we use the daily punctuality of each line.
  • On time = less than 3 minutes late. Percentages only use trains whose delay we know; delays more than 60 min early or 120 min late are discarded as implausible.
  • Operators are ranked with at least 3,000 trains with a known delay in the month and a known delay for 30 % of their trains or more; lines, with at least 1,000.
  • We merge the different spellings of each operator. Countries that only publish timetables, without real-time delays, are left out of the ranking.
  • We only use sources whose licence allows commercial use. Sources and licences
